Why Pokemon X&Y Are Awesome

ACK! Has it really been almost a month since my last post?  Ooh that means exactly one month ago today, JDubz proposed!  Awww…

Anyway, clearly I’ve been keeping busy since my last post.  It’s probably a bit too late to go into a whole Comic Con post, since it’s kind of old news now.  (I’m sorry!!  “Being Engaged = Wedding Planning” plus “Pokemon = Yes”… so my free time is kind of used up these days! lol)  But if you’re interested, you can see my photos from Comic Con on the StreetPass Long Island Fan Page.  If you weren’t able to attend NYCC and see our StreetPass Panel, you can view it in it’s entirety on YouTube:

So what’s life like after New York Comic Con?  Well, like most Nintendo fans, I’m completely engrossed in Pokemon X and Y!  Of course, I still set aside time to play ACNL (Update:  Chops is finally moving out!  My plans to expand my back yard will finally come to fruition!  I must add a new public work in my back yard ASAP before another townie tries to move in directly behind my house…) but I’ve been playing a lot of Pokemon as well.  Here’s why!

Why Pokemon X&Y Are Awesome:

  • Super Training!  ST is by far one of the best new features to the Pokemon series.  In all previous generations, having a well trained team with perfect stats was something only the hardest of the hardcore competitors could achieve, via a painstaking EV training regimen.  Now in Gen 6 we have SUPER TRAINING, a super easy and fairly quick method for gaining perfect stats (as per your Pokemon’s nature) starting right at Level 1!  All you have to do is play some simple mini games to increase your EV’s, and this really levels out the playing field for the PVGC and other competitive Pokemon battles.  Everyone has the chance to improve their Pokemon via ST!  (Note: Perfect IV’s, however, are still somewhat difficult to muster up.  Luckily, there is a cool post-game facility to help with the IV situation.  I don’t want to post spoilers about that just yet.  But the question is, how soon is too soon to post spoilers?  What do you guys think?  Comment if you think I should post whatever spoilers I want!  lol)
  • PSS!  The latest in player communication is the PSS (or Player Search System) which connects you to fellow Pokemon players in new ways.  If your WIFI is turned off, you can view anyone who is playing on local wireless and interact with them in many ways, such as Trading, Battling, Voice Chat and even viewing one another’s Trainer Video (yep, that’s another new feature in X&Y – edit an EPK for yourself lol!).  For those who have turned on their WIFI, you see even more!  Anyone who is online from your friends list will appear on the PSS, as well as anyone you might have randomly traded or battled against.  On top of that, you will also see a constantly updating string of random people who happen to be online at the same time as you.  So even if you have NO friends on your list (how sad) you can still find people to trade and battle!
  • Wonder Trade!  One of my personal favorite changes to the latest Pokemon Generation is the addition of Wonder Trade.  As someone who spends a lot of time breeding, I end up with lots of “unwanted” (or “spare” Pokemon, to be nice lol) Pokemon that I don’t know what to do with.  Trying to trade away a batch of Weedles on the GTS can be time consuming, and really… who is going to want to accept your trade?  Rather than releasing your spare Pokemon (which essentially kind of “kills” your Pokemon, since that code is never seen again!!), you can now do a Wonder Trade!  Wonder Trades are awesome because you can trade any Pokemon for some mystery Pokemon that is sent to you via someone else also looking to do a Wonder Trade.  People have gotten some really great Pokemon via Wonder Trade, such as starters, legendaries, Pokemon infected with Pokerus, region-specific formes, and shinies!  Give it a try and see what you might get!  (Note:  There has been some buzz on the internet of a glitch involving Wonder Trade, where in rare cases players PC Boxes were infected with a “Bad Egg” that corrupts game files.  Please rest assured that this is an extremely rare glitch that is getting blown out of proportion because of sites like GameFAQs, where people freak out over the smallest of things.  The chances of you getting stuck w/a Bad Egg are less than 1%.)
  • The New PGL!  The Pokemon Global Link was very popular in Gen. 5, and it has a new look for Gen. 6!  I really like it so far.  With the new PGL, you can sync your game at any time (no more drawn out process of putting a Pokemon to “sleep” at the Dream World) and then when you visit your profile on the PGL you can see an activity stream, much like a Facebook profile, of what you’ve accomplished!  On top of ‘status updates’ such as, “Bianca just beat the 5th Gym!”, your PGL profile will also show your in-game photos, as well as any medals you might have earned.
  • Battle Chateau!  This is my personal favorite new addition to Pokemon X&Y.  The Battle Chateau is kind of like the Battle Stadiums from Gen. 5, only at the Battle Chateau you have a rank and the higher your rank, the tougher your opponents will be!  On top of that, your rank also affects how much money you earn per battle.  Since this is a Chateau (meaning Castle in French) you can expect the payouts to be higher than a regular battle.  Add onto that the ranking factor and put an Amulet Coin on your Pokemon and you’re looking at a LOT of money per battle!
  • Mega Evolutions!!!  Last but not least, this new feature in Pokemon X&Y is a huge hit!  Lots of Pokemon now have a new evolution… a MEGA Evolution!  With the use of a special Mega Band, your trainer character can control when these Pokemon achieve their Mega Evolution.  Going Mega changes the Pokemon’s stats and makes them a powerhouse in their own way.  Did I mention that Mega Evolutions have a new look, and they look really bad ass??  Mega Evolutions are one of the coolest new features in Pokemon X&Y, so check it out!

If you haven’t started playing Pokemon X&Y yet, what are you waiting for?  This Generation is a great place to start, for those of you who haven’t played a Pokemon game since Gen. 1, and adds lots of cool features for the seasoned Pokemon veteran.  There is literally something for everyone.  I didn’t even cover all of the new features such as the Berry Farm or the Battle Restaurants in Lumiose City.  Don’t forget the awesome Pokemon Amie mini game, which allows you to pet and interact with your Pokemon in a Nintendogs kind of way.  It’s REALLY cute.  There’s so many new things to try out in Pokemon X&Y, so don’t waste another minute!  Get it now!  😀

Leaving PokéPark!

It was a short stay in PokéPark 2.  While the game was completely adorable, unfortunately it’s time to go.  Don’t worry Pikachu – I’ll always have your save file!

I’ve decided to trade in PokéPark 2 towards the purchase of Kid Icarus: Uprising at GameStop.  But don’t get me wrong, PokéPark 2 was a lot of fun!  The mini games were great (albeit repetitive) and the new battling aspect was a lot of fun.  I’ve got a ton of photos [memories!] that I’ve got posted on Flickr.  Feel free to look through them and comment!  🙂

Here are some of my favorite photos from the game:

Sometimes you had to befriend Pokémon by doing them favors, like carrying Ferroseed to a place he needed to go.  But mostly you had to either battle or chase the Pokémon to become friends, and honestly that does get kinda boring after a while.

I would definitely say that Wish Park was the coolest part about this game.  You’d go to this weird trippy area where all the Pokémon are possessed.  Each area of Wish Park had it’s own theme, and this Pagoda one was my favorite.

Here’s another view of that area of Wish Park.  Here you can see Flareon all possessed and upset.  Wah!

This photo represents the only reason that I’m slightly hesitant to get rid of my game.  Hidden throughout the PokéPark are these shrines that have depictions of legendary Pokémon on them.  If you befriend the right amount of Pokémon, these legendaries come out of their shrines, and you can battle and become friends with them!  I’m pretty sure you can potentially become friends with Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Zekrom and Reshiram.  But the qualifications to get them to appear is a pain in the butt and I’d never have finished it before Kid Icarus comes out.  So alas, I don’t have any cool photos of Pikachu with Reshiram.  But I can always rent this game and finish it up at a later date!

So that’s my overview of PokéPark 2.  All in all, it’s a great game for Poké-fanatics.  For hardcore gamers it’s not a great choice, as there’s not much action or challenge involved.  But it’s also a perfect game for kids.

In other Poké-News, today is the last day to register for the 2012 International Challenge, which is a WIFI Tournament hosted through the Pokémon Global Union.  The actual tournament starts tomorrow and runs until the 26th of March.  On the 27th, the PGL site is going down as they prepare for whatever changes and updates will need to happen when Pokémon Black & White 2 debut in Japan this coming June.  (I’m totally buying a Japanese copy of that new game when it comes out!)

If that’s not exciting enough, I also have a real-life tournament coming up this Saturday!  JDubz and I are going to attend an event called Pokémon Battle Through the Generations, which is being held at a local games store.  They are hosting a tournament where you can bring ANY of your old Pokémon games, all the way back through Red & Blue.  If there is an opponent who also has the game (and a connector cable!) you can battle and win money!  I don’t know what kind of turnout to expect, but I will of course document the event and share all the fun with you guys!  🙂

Mario Kart 7

Lots and lots to report today!

First of all, if you didn’t already know, Mario Kart 7 was just released in North America!  It’s a 3DS game and I am a proud owner.

Mario Kart 7

I got the game earlier today and have played it for a few hours already!  I got gold medals in all 8 Grand Prix cups on the 50cc level.  Half way through achieving gold on 100cc now!  I also got the guide for this game so if you are stuck or need help, I’d be glad to look something up!  🙂

The new levels are REALLY beautiful.  There are some really cool features, like hang-gliding and driving underwater.  I also really like how the game developers chose different retro boards to include from the older MK games, instead of the same old Rainbow Road and Mario Circuit.  If you like any of the previous Mario Kart installments, be sure to pick this up!  It’s a ton of fun!

There are some other exciting news updates I want to include today.  First of all, for all you Pokémon players, there are some new free furniture items for the Pokémon Dream World.  Simply log in to the PGL and find the Holiday theme decor promotion.  The password is NPWINTER.

Holiday Dream World Decor

That’s not all!  I meant to post this a while ago, but we have some awesome news for ANIMAL CROSSING!!!  Here is a quote from November’s issue of Nintendo Power:

In addition, the company released some new images from Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion 2, and Paper Mario.  Little new information on those titles was offered, aside from the fact that Animal Crossing will incorporate SpotPass features, plus allow players to serve as the village chief for the first time in franchise history.  (Hopefully that means we’ll finally get the chance to bring nefarious kingpin Tom Nook to justice!)

ZOMG!  We can be the mayors of our new Animal Crossing towns!  How cool!  But what happened to Tortimer?  Is he… ok?  Maybe he retired.  Anyway, if that wasn’t enough of a teaser for you, a new VIDEO has surfaced with some information and insights on the new Animal Crossing game:

Before I go, there’s another important tidbit for all you 3DS users.  A big system update is scheduled for Thursday, 12/8.  There will be some improvements to the eShop, as well as 3D video capability and some additions to the StreetPass feature.  I’ll try and post an entry about that when it happens.  Until then… happy gaming!

Quick PGL Post

Hi all!  I don’t have much time to write.  Been so busy juggling Pokémon Rumble Blast, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, and three jobs that there’s barely any time to blog.  However, I just wanted to jot this down.  Mostly for my own purposes but whatever.  It’s about how to attempt to find your friends on the Pokémon Global Link website.  Apparently when you are on the PGL, your profile is on a specific server.  If your friends aren’t on that same server, they can’t be your Dream World friend.  (Lame!)  So here’s the info on how to find out what server you’re on, and how to search for friends on that server:

FAQ from Bulbagarden

OK so I have both Black and White, and I made two PGL accounts for them.

  • “member_savedata_id”:“[7662693]”
  • “world_id”:“[1]”

  • “member_savedata_id”:“[8822118]”
  • “world_id”:“[4]”

As you can see, I can’t even visit MYSELF in the PGL because my two games’ profiles are on different servers.  Are any of you out in the interwebs on either server 1 or server 4 of the PGL?  Please let me know so we can be friends!  🙂

New Pokémon Updates!

Well, I’ve been trying not to be TOO busy lately, but it’s tough.  I’ve got three part time jobs, I have a new [totally awesome gamer] boyfriend and I’m SUPER close to beating Kirby Mass Attack.  But just because I have a lot going on doesn’t mean I can’t take the time to read my monthly Nintendo Power and tell you about any interesting news that I might discover!

So today, there’s some things you should know about Pokémon if you haven’t heard them already!

Pokemon News

Pokemon News!

  1. Pokémon Rumble Blast is coming out in 20 days!  SQUEEEEEEE!!!
  2. PGL Update!  On September 28th, the PGL added a new area to explore, called the Spooky Manor.  There’s a new mini game in this haunted area, and you can befriend many more ghost-types to send to your Black and White games!
  3. Speaking of befriending ghost-type Pokémon, there’s an exclusive Banette that you can download from the PGL by entering the code “NPCHARACTER” in the Promotions area.  This Banette is special because it has the move Cotton Guard, which raises defense!  (Though personally I don’t need a reason to download any exclusive Pokémon.  I just gotta catch em all!)
  4. If you didn’t see it already, there has been a slight update to the Pokédex 3D app for 3DS users.  To download the update, open the Pokédex and click on the Menu (gear button).  Scroll down and there is an Update button to click on.  This update will unlock features that have previously been somewhat impossible to get, because they require you to have a set number of stickers in your sticker book.  I say this somewhat impossible because I have been stuck on 120 of 120 Pokémon in my ‘Dex…  I don’t get anymore Pokémon via SpotPass, and I can’t use markers to download the missing entries.  So I don’t know how I’m supposed to get them all.  Oh well, at least this update allows me to play with all the extra features (such as a pause button, an action button, etc!)
Since Halloween is coming up, I think it’s cool that the PGL opened up a haunted house.  I love this holiday!  It’s so fun, I might even take the time to play with Jack the Pumpkin King in ACCF!  Do you have any fun Halloween plans?  There’s a section in Nintendo Power magazine where they ask you to submit your Nintendo related fan photos and such.  I am going to try my best to take some Halloween themed AR photos and share them with you!  If you have a cute photo of your Mii in a pumpkin patch, or maybe just a great photo from Halloween in ACCF, please share them with me on Twitter!  I’ll put them on the blog for everyone to see!  🙂
