Welcome to わさび (Wasabi)!

Mayor’s Log

1/12/13

Sleeping in a tent is not good for my back.  No surprise that I wasn’t feeling my best this morning.  For some reason I was repeatedly tripping and falling flat on my face all morning.

Needless to say, my first priority was to give Tom Nook my down payment on an actual house.  I gave him ฿10,000 (yes that’s right, I’ve decided ฿ will be the currency symbol for Bells) and was told that my house would be ready tomorrow.  Not sure how he will manage to construct a house overnight but I’m excited!

I thought that for today it would be nice to get to know the residents of Wasabi.  Unfortunately since I don’t speak the language, I’m struggling to learn their names.  But here’s the current Wasabi Town Census:

  • たいへいた (Taiheita?) – A friendly, large brown Bear.  I’m just going to call him Teddy.
  • 2ごう (2-Go?) – This Squirrel is a familiar face to me.  King Squirt told me that she once lived in Shaolin, and called herself Agent S.
  • リリィ (Ri-Rii) – She is a tall, blue Wolf.  We are neighbors and I see her quite often.
  • キンプ (Kinpu?) – The majestic, royal Lion of Wasabi.  I’ll call him Kingypoo.  The inside of his house looks very regal, he has a throne and everything!
  • ペーター (Paytah) – A delightful young male Deer.  I guess his name is Peter?  We’ll stick with that for now.

I noticed that a piece of land had been sectioned off, meaning that another resident would be moving in soon.  How exciting!

Besides meeting all the townies, I also spent a good amount of time working to improve my town by picking weeds and planting fruit trees.  This apparently pleased my Shih-tsu assistant, because she started raving about how I needed to keep up the good work and obtain 100 points.  Town points?  Mayor points?  I have no idea.  After all this hard Mayor-ly work, I thought it might be nice to unwind.  I spoke with Yumi and she said she could open Kasen’s town gates so I could come and see the K.K. Slider acoustic set, which he performs only on Saturday nights.  Clearly I didn’t want to miss this!  (Especially since we have yet to open up a nightclub in Wasabi…)

The show was great.  Kokuto came along as well.  Here’s just a few photos:

Yumi sure has some sweet dance moves!  She learned how to do a lot of cute moves from a stand-up comedian named Dr. Shrunk.  Unfortunately he only performs for an audience of one, and only works during the day.  My best bet will be to open up my own nightclub in Wasabi if I want to be able to dance like Yumi.  Another addition for my Mayor’s To Do List!

After the show we took a quick trip to Kasen’s Resort Island and played a few Island Tours.  I was able to buy a cute sailor cap.  But now it’s time for bed – my last night sleeping in a tent!

1/13/13

Oh Glorious Day!  I have an actual HOUSE now!

Yes, it’s still just as cramped but I have a roof.  And a door.  No more brisk drafty winds for me!  I spoke with Tom Nook and, yesterday he apparently neglected to tell me that I still owed him ฿98,000 for the house.  Ugh.  I figure if I do enough fishing around town, I should be able to pay it off fairly soon.  Then I heard that there was a visitor in town named Joan, who was selling turnips for the stalk market!  Now that’s a good way to make some money!

Unfortunately the buying price for turnips this week was pretty high – ฿108 per turnip.  I opted to just buy ten.  Hopefully I will be able to sell them for a decent profit later this week!

The new resident moved in today.  Her name is ウエンディ(Yu-in-dee?).  She is a yellow Sheep that kind of looks like a piñata.  I think I’ll call her “Windy.”

For most of the day, I was fishing and earning money to pay off my house loan.  (I eventually made it!  Hooray!  Then Tom Nook began saying something about how my house was too small and I should expand it…  I think I agreed.  Most likely will be in debt again tomorrow, but with a larger room in my home!)  But in the afternoon, I popped over to Kasen once again.  Today she had a friend named Zen over, and we all hung out in the well-stocked Kasen Museum.

Have I mentioned that I’ve been taking loads of photos?  But there are just too many to include in my log.  The rest are posted on Flickr.

After having fun at the Museum, I headed back to Wasabi.  There’s always more to explore!  I was hanging out by my house, looking at the waterfall from the edge of the cliff where my house is situated.  I noticed that off to the north was a beach area I hadn’t noticed before.  I’ve decided to call it “Secret Beach.”  I say it’s a secret because there’s only one way to get there – by swimming!  I pulled my wet suit from my closet and braced myself for the freezing ocean water.

I mean, as far as beaches go, Secret Beach isn’t very glamorous.  The train tracks are right above, as well as the metal bridge that the train crosses to get to the next town.  But it’s still special to me ♥.  It’s an exclusive beach that only those who are privy to the info and have the proper equipment can visit!  Since I was swimming around anyway, I started diving for some rare fish and crustaceans.  Now the Wasabi Museum is looking a little better!  It’s nothing like the museum of Kasen but these things don’t happen overnight.  🙂

More to come tomorrow!

The Ghost and the King

Weather Report

Brrr!  Can’t you feel that chill in the air?  I can… but I think that’s cuz my heater’s not working.  😛  I don’t really remember seeing snow at the end of last November in AC… but maybe I’m mistaken.  Anyway, Squirt’s birthday is fast approaching.  So of course he sent out jack-in-the-box’s to everyone in town.  (I had like 12 of them in front of Town Hall.)  I wonder who will bring Squirt his birthday cake?

In other news, the day I’ve awaited for a long time has finally come.

LEAVE NOW!!!

Elise is finally talking about leaving Shaolin!  It only took weeks of ignoring her and burying pitfall seeds in front of her house.  Sheesh!

Yesterday, as [King] Squirt was wandering around town looking for a piece of Mushroom furniture, he noticed something shiny and yellow on the ground.  An empty lamp!  It’s been quite a while since I’d seen one of these around.  So of course, later that night I logged in to find Wisp!

Jay aint scared of no ghosts!

Jay did a pretty good job of finding Wisp for me!  (Kings usually let their royal subjects do all the work, after all…)  Squirt had a nice chat with Wisp about living in lamps and then Wisp instructed him to rub the lamp from the attic in his house.  Such is the protocol.  Squirt rushed home, wondering what a guy who has everything should wish for…

I want a Ghost Butler!

Up in the ROYAL attic (as you can see, King Squirt only sleeps in a GORGEOUS canopy bed), Wisp came out and wanted to know what Squirt’s wish would be.  First I chose “Weed!” because I thought perhaps there were weeds around town that I hadn’t yet picked.  But Wisp was very polite and said, “Umm, there really aren’t many weeds in your town.  Would you like to pick something else?”  I was pretty shocked at being given a second chance at the wish!  Since there’s not much of a cockroach problem in Shaolin (nothing that a few stomping feet can’t handle, anyway…) I opted for “Give me stuff!”

But I already have all the ‘stuff.’  My catalog is basically complete.  I didn’t think it was likely that Wisp was going to give me a Nook Point item or anything special like that.  I ended up choosing “Accessory,” with a small hope that Wisp might give me one of the very special colored Feathers that I still needed.  But what did he give me?

A DimentioMsk HDLC!!

I didn’t know if I should be laughing or disgusted.  😛

つきみ – Tsukimi

You might have heard of the Harvest Moon before.  And no, I’m not talking about the Nintendo game.  I mean the REAL Harvest Moon.  Now, in RL, the harvest moon is all big and orange in color.  It’s pretty cool.  So when I heard that an event in Japan was happening called つきみ, or Tsukimi the Moon Viewing Festival, I rushed over to check it out.  The US and EU version of this holiday is tonight, I think.  I’ll check it out after work.

Tsukimi

Tsukimi

I was hoping that maybe the moon would look different for this event.  But no… same old white rock in the sky.  Ahh well.  I was able to pick up a bunch of Dango items (Rice balls from Japan!  Yum!) before touring Orenji’s (オレンジ) town.  I haven’t quite sounded out the name of his town yet, it’s all written in Katakana, which I stink at reading.  😛

Dark Abyss of Creepies

Dark Abyss of Creepies

This was in オレンジ’s basement.  AHHH!!!  Darkness and scary bugs!  Poor ちょこまる never caught a Tarantula this past summer and he has to wait until next year.  I suggested to オレンジ to try and sell one of his bugs during the Flea Market, and have ちょこまる buy it from his neighbor.  But I’m not sure if they understood what I was saying lol!!

At the end of my visit, I told my Japanese friends that my gate would be open at 9:30 PM that night.  I didn’t really expect them to show up.  So you can imagine my surprise when I opened the Shaolin Gates hours later and オレンジ ran through the gates!  Hery showed up too, sporting a new Gas Mask.  Maybe his town Frost is undergoing fumigations?  😛

First Show of the Night!

First Show of the Night!

After a while, オレンジ had to go and, you know… start his day and whatnot.  It’s so weird to think about how we can hang out even though we’re on opposite sides of the world.  Gotta love Animal Crossing for bringing people together!  Right after he left, Miao came through the gates.  Hery had to go for a bit so Miao and I treated ourselves to another K.K. song.

Miao has a CRUSH! lol jk

Miao has a CRUSH! lol jk

It was starting to get late.  But then, quite unexpectedly, ちょこまる made his way to Shaolin!  I thought he had just overslept.  I told him about the Shaolin Charm, but I’m pretty sure the fish have different names in Japan.  He seemed to know what I was looking for, but didn’t have any luck finding one.

Beach Photo!

Beach Photo!

I think it’s great that ちょこまる decided to start wearing the HDLC Dimentio Msk.  He’s breaking the unspoken rules of Animal Crossing in Japan, but that’s ok!  This game is all about doing whatever you wanna do.  Power to the people!!

In Other News…

New DLC has been announced for the EU and also for JP players.  (Lucky!!!  The next US DLC isn’t til next month, and it’s just for stinky old Election Day!  But I digress…)  The new EU DLC is 4 Weeks of Nintendogs!  I think it’s really cute and I’m totally jealous.  Starting on 10/7, EU players will receive four different dogs in four weeks.  How cute!  Now we can finally have pets in our house!  (Pets other than fish and bugs, of course.)

The JP DLC is しろぐみのぼうし, aka a BASEBALL CAP!  Now, I’m not going to pretend that I am fluent in Japanese and can read the JP Nintendo website.  But based on the photo, it looks like there will be two caps released, one red and one white, in honor of the 日本シリーズ.  That of course, means the Japanese Championship Series, which is usually held in October, just like our World Series here in the states.  As a baseball fan, I’m pretty psyched about this!

So yeah, exciting new DLC for our overseas counterparts.  Now the only question is… why does all the US DLC suck so much???  I mean, what did we get over the summer… hmm…

  • Creepy Mayor’s Flag
  • Hot Dog Hat (ok I did like this one)
  • Useless Dolphin Model
  • Ladder Shades (like three months late..)
  • Ugly Hopscotch Floor
  • Pile of Leaves????

So I’m not really expecting much in terms of our next DLC, for Election Day.  I mean, what could it possibly be?  A voting booth?  When is NOA going to start giving us cute outfits and pets for our homes?

Anyway, keep an eye out for the Autumn Moon tonight.  I’ll probably open my gates again tomorrow since I don’t have to work.  So if you missed out on the fun last night (or maybe my town was full when you tried to enter!) you can try again Monday!  If you’d like to come, email or message me a time you are available.  I’m free all day.  I still have some Dango’s left for anyone who needs them!  😀

K.K. Concert

Last night I went to Frost!  Hery the Hobo had some black market items that I had to pick up for someone (who shall remain nameless.) ww!

Hery the Hobo likes my fish!

Hery the Hobo likes my fish!

I think Hery looks hilarious like that.  The purple polka-dot shoes really tie the outfit together.  Plus I bet it would make Gracie go nuts.

Hery reminded me that K.K. Slider was in town, so we rushed over to his Museum to check out the show.  Here’s some of my favorite pics from the concert:

Extreme Town Makeover

The end of summer is fast approaching in Shaolin.  The pressure is on to catch the remaining bugs of the season!

My first strategy was to change the time of my Wii.  Perhaps I’d have better luck finding the Tarantula in the early morning, since I usually look at night.  Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything except an unfit mother.

Unfit Mother!

Unfit Mother!

Kaitlin was rambling on about how she must have been separated from her child in Herito’s town, Frost (probably while she was on a drunken bender).  Luckily, I was quickly able to get in touch with Herito and open my gates, despite my shaky internet connection.  I wonder what prize Katie will send him?  I’ll have to ask.  Herito wanted to show me a cool little trick he and some friends had figured out.

Scaring Apollo

Scaring Apollo

We got to talking about tarantulas and Herito began describing what he called the “Drastic Method” for catching creepy crawlies.  Basically, he explained that as you pass from acre to acre, the game spawns 25 bugs.  (I think the same rule applies with fish.)  He said that if you cut down all the trees and get rid of all the flowers in your town, you will increase your chances of catching a tarantula, scorpion or giant petaltail.  How, you might ask?  Well, if there are no trees then there are no beetles.  I’m talking regular trees AND palm trees.  The game looooves to respawn a million fruit beetles instead of bringing out a tarantula.  And by getting rid of flowers, there’s no chance of a butterfly spawning and taking up a spot either.  PLUS by having no trees or flowers in the way, it’s a lot easier to spot and chase a bug.

Herito tried to convince me that I should wait til the end of August, and give my town a chance.  But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try the Drastic Method.  I’ve been wanting to re-do my town’s foliage anyway.  Make some fruit groves.  Organize flowers in a better way.  Nook asked me today if I wanted to change the store – I chose Variety, so I’ll be able to plant more flowers in a week.  And of course, we all know that I’ve been having trouble catching creepy crawlies cuz I always lose sight of them.  So yesterday I whipped out my axe and just started chopping away.  Think of it as an Extreme Town Makeover!

Extreme Town Makeover

Extreme Town Makeover

Personally, I think the town looks really cool like this.  I feel like I just restarted the game.  At first, I didn’t really see anything of interest.  I circled the town a bunch of times.  Then I noticed that the number of moths in town had VASTLY increased since cutting down all the trees.  So I started chasing the moths to scare them away, to cause new bugs to be spawned.  Once I started doing that… I started noticing some creatures scuttling around on the ground!

Scorpion sighting!

Scorpion sighting!

I must have spotted 10 scorpion last night.  It was crazy!  I managed to catch half of them, which was even crazier!  I developed a technique where I would corral the scorpion either into the alcove by the two-level slope, or up by the gate where the bus stop is.  Then I would run up the ramp and take out my net.  I like this technique because it’s pretty safe – the scorpion can’t sting you while you’re up on a ramp.  The only problem is I can’t really get a great angle to catch it with my net, so that took a little practice.  But it obviously worked since I caught so many of them!

I wasn’t seeing any tarantulas.  Ok, I saw one at first but it got me.  Big surprise.  Then it was just scorpion after scorpion.  I was starting to wonder where all the big spiders were.  So I went around to my townies to try and change some catch-phrases.  Victoria wanted a new greeting, so I wrote “Oh tarantula”.  Not more than 5 minutes later, I spotted a tarantula!  I chased it to the gate and rushed up the bus stop ramp.  But I couldn’t see it at ALL.  My net swipes were futile.  So I took a baby step down the ramp in hopes of getting a glimpse.  Nothing.  Then another step down and – BAM!  The tarantula jumped at me and bit me.  😦

Looks like the ramp technique wasn’t going to work (necessarily) for the Tarantula.  So I decided I needed to use my “bee approach” instead.  When I was chopping down trees, I released all 5 swarms of bees, and had caught 3 of them.  My technique for the bees is to run away as soon as you see them, then take out your net and let them come to you.  For some reason, I can gauge when to swipe if I see the bug coming at me.  So I decided to use this technique for the tarantula.  Chase it to a place where it can’t kill itself by jumping in a river or something, step about 10 paces away, THEN take out the net.  Let the tarantula come to you.

When I saw the tarantula on the main slope near Squirt’s house, I chased it up the slope, to Brocollo’s house.  Then I walked away and took out the net.  It charged and BAM!  In my net!  I was so excited that I forgot to take a picture.  So I headed straight to the museum to gross out Blathers.

Blathers on Tarantulas

Blathers on Tarantulas

Yep, he was pretty grossed out.  But I wasn’t!  I was so proud to have finally caught that beast.  I went straight to the Insect Exhibit  to watch the new Tarantula duke it out with the Scorpion.

Insect Exhibit

Insect Exhibit

Now, all that’s left for me to catch in August is the Giant Petaltail.  I’ll be looking today between 5pm and 7pm for the massive flying monster.  I really hope I can catch it quick so I can start rebuilding my town.  Once the petaltail is caught, I’ll be accepting donations.  Any fruit (except apples!  NO APPLES!) and flowers would be happily accepted – plus planting a flower in Shaolin will unlock the town charm.  So that’s a bonus for anyone who wants to help rebuild Shaolin!

I would also like to just remind everyone that Squirt’s retirement is on the horizon.  He only needs to complete his fish and bug catalogues, finish collecting the clothes for his regular catalogue, collect the Spooky Set on Halloween and complete his Mush Set in November.  And of course, get a birthday cake on his ‘anniversary.’  But after all that, Squirt will be retiring.  Everything will be complete.  And it will finally be time for Squirt to take it easy and let the other characters run amok.

I’ll keep you all posted on Squirt’s retirement status.  Don’t worry, he’ll still be around for a few more months.  But that’ll be it!  So get your retirement gifts ready for November!

Missing Mommy

There’s a lost kitten in Shaolin.

Mom is MIA

Mom is MIA

Katie the kitten is back once again.  She says her negligent mother is in Doomdoom, where Vella lives.  I asked Vella if she has talked to Booker at the gate.  Sadly, in her town, Booker said nobody was visiting.

However, I had some shirts that I had ordered for Vella, plus I heard that a new Café had opened down by the beach in Doomdoom.  I decided to visit.  Maybe Katie’s Mom was hiding there!  But probably not.

No large yellow motherly cats with spatulas were spotted in Doomdoom.  I did find Café Locke, which was extremely upscale!  Luckily I’m a VIP or I’m not sure I would have been allowed in lol!  I’m sure Gracie herself would have been proud to step into such a fine establishment.  It’s only too bad that the poor espresso maker doesn’t “fit” on a table top, and has to sit on the floor… (is that hygenic?  lol)

Cafe Locke

In other news, I was chatting with Elise last night.  She’s the townie who moved to Shaolin from a mysterious town, Adamberg.  I don’t know which of my friends is from Adamberg (it could even be a friend of a friend’s town for all I know) but I got to learn a little bit more about it!

Adambergs Town Tune

Adamberg's Town Tune

Elise “sang” the town tune from Adamberg to me, and told me that she’ll always have fond memories of that place.  I thought that was really cool!  I had never had a neighbor move in from a friend’s town before, and I had no idea they would mention things about their previous town!  I can only hope that the Shaolin townies that have moved on to new places are saying nice things about this town too!

I’ve been preparing for the Flea Market tomorrow.  Since the Photo Shoot is over, I’m selling off all the most expensively priced items to my neighbors.  There is a moon, a pyramid, some sphinxes, ancient columns, and plenty of sharks, arowana and coelacanth to go around!  I only hope that I can manage to get the townies to buy it all at double the price!  After clearing out the rooms, I decided to go with a new theme for Squirt’s house.  It’s going to be a School House!  I have it all planned out.  The basement is going to be a Kindergarten/Nursery theme for the “Nursery School Room.”  The main floor is going to be a “Science Lab” classroom.  And upstairs I’ve set up a “Schoolyard” for gym class!

Squirt doing the High Jump!

Squirt doing the High Jump!

All I have to do now to finish the School House is sell off my Flea Market wares so I can fill the room with desks and chalk boards!  Pictures will be posted, don’t worry lol!  But you should come visit and see for yourself!  🙂

And finally, the four leaf clover has been working for me again.  I’ve been half-heartedly attempting to reason with Serena the Fountain Goddess lately.  Usually she just gives me the regular responses.  But this evening she was feeling a little more generous!  She started with the predictable ‘Did you throw a gold axe in here…’ and I was honest, as always.  Then Serena offered me a Gold Axe, and promptly started laughing that she was all out of those.  But to my surprise, she offered me a Silver Axe!  I said “Yes, please.” and she started telling me about precious metals!

Silver Axe!

My Lucky Day!

This morning I woke up ready to start my AC day, excited for the potential of new USA DLC, the Ladder Glasses!  (see here)

But Pete was not at my door.  Instead, I was greeted by pouring rain, thunder and lightning.  That’s ok!  Rain is good, and thunderstorms are even better because they are rumored to bring sharks out!  I’ve already got Apollo praying for our town to be visited by a few Hammerheads.

Hammerhead

Hammerhead

I haven’t caught one yet, so hopefully the thunderstorm will last until tonight when I try again!

The elusive Piranha has been avoiding me for a while.  Squirt’s been fishing in the river night and day ever since Deb caught one.  Usually when I fish, I press the A button on the Wii Remote to reel it in.  For some reason, I had noticed quite a few small fish escaping me while fishing with this method, despite my Gold Rod.  I decided to try shaking the Wii Remote instead, since I was desperate to catch one!  Suddenly, I spotted a small sized fish in the large pool area of the river.  I shook the Wii Remote in time and…

Woo Piranha!

Woo Piranha!

Finally!  I’d just like to mention that when I was playing as Deb, I used a Silver Rod and pressed A like I normally do and had no problems catching it.  Deb donated the piranha to the Museum, so Squirt just needed the piranha for his Fish Index!  I want to earn a legitimate set of Gold Tools, so I have to catch every fish and bug in the game!

As I was walking around triumphantly, I saw Saharah wandering around town.  Apollo is an “older” townie, so he seems to know about Saharah’s younger days.

Saharahs Past

Saharah's Past

I don’t know about Saharah doing stand-up comedy, but I remember she used to talk normally in Wild World!  LOL!  I figured I might as well go around and look for wallpapers.  I’m still missing a couple of random Saharah items so it was worth a shot.  While walking around town, I was commissioned by a townie to deliver a package to Curly.  I didn’t really want to talk to him since I’m trying to get him to leave, but I decided I could at least ask him for old wallpaper while I was delivering the present.  When I got down to the beach, Curly was waiting for me with an urgent message:

See ya, wouldnt wanna be ya!

See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!

You can imagine how hard it was not to laugh, and instead politely tell him “I see…” to confirm that I did not mind that he was going.  I also enlisted all my Shaolin characters to also give him the same pep talk.  Curly will be gone within the week, I’d guess!  HUZZAH!!!  No more swine flu for me!  With my luck though, some new townie will move right into the same spot where his house was lol!

I heard from Vella that Gracie herself was in her store GracieGrace in the city.  Since it’s Wednesday I was planning to take the Basu (that’s “bus” in Japanese, I’m trying to learn how to speak it hehe!) to check out Redd’s new inventory.  I ignored Kapp’n as best I could, he’s the most annoying driver!  I went straight to GracieGrace and peeked at the back of the store.  Gasp, she was there!  I ran back out to prepare for my evaluation.

Since I had discovered fashion styles, I had an outfit planned that was fool-proof.  My watermelon costume has a “funky” style, so I had a “funky” hairdo to match.  My shoes were red.  It HAD to work!  I also grabbed my Gold Card from Lloid’s Checkroom at the Auction House, since I was planning to buy the entire Gracie set if I passed my review.  And good news, it worked!

Arigatou Gozaimasu!

Arigatou Gozaimasu!

I was very proud as I bought every last piece of furniture in the boutique.  I’m sure animals were staring as I walked with my pockets full of expensive wares and went straight for the “bad side” of the city, Crazy Redd’s alley.  He had a Proper Painting for sale (I don’t even look at the other items he sells, since I have them all catalogued already!) so I snatched it up, even though Ruby had warned me about buying paintings this morning.  I was too happy about all the great luck I’ve been having today (thanks to my lucky four leaf clover, I’m guessing!) and took the painting straight to Blathers.

How Proper!

How Proper!

Wow!  Now I only need four more paintings to complete my Art section of the Museum!

Long story short, I’m going to be wearing this four leaf clover for a WHILE!  😀
